Their Marketing Mandate

Desert Moon Restaurants --- a quick service (as opposed to a fast food) --- franchise originating in Arizona was opening branches throughout the Northeast.  Although their food seemed Mexican-inspired, Desert Moon didn’t want to be known as a Mexican fast food chain. Sure, they featured tacos, burritos and enchiladas.  But these items weren’t of the standard, familiar kind.  They were far tastier and had superior ingredients. Desert Moon asked us to launch their introductory advertising campaign.

Our Creative Solution

Our very first priority was to position Desert Moon.  Since we had to stay away from the word “Mexican” here’s how we branded them:  “Desert Moon.  Mouth-Watering Food Straight From The Fires Of The Old Southwest.” The way we saw it, our client had two separate constituencies.  The first?  People who already ate Mexican food and would be drawn to the promise of superiority.  The second?  People who never ate Mexican food yet could be converted by the suggestion of Desert Moon’s distinct, lip-smacking difference. We recommended outdoor advertising as being the most efficient, cost-effective medium here.  And so we featured lavish photography of the most prominent items on their menu.  Accompanied by such headlines as “Never Cared For Tacos, Burritos and Enchiladas Your Whole Life?   Permit Us To Offer You A Life-Altering Experience.”  Essentially this campaign marks the newest spin on the fastest-growing food category in America.

Their Marketing Mandate

The Freedom Boat Club was a business based on offering people a very tempting  proposition:  full access to any of a huge fleet of beautiful boats … for any length of time …without ever having to worry about the expenses and responsibilities of ownership. Actually a pretty innovative concept.  They wanted us to target the nautical-minded and dramatize this  concept’s many  advantages.

Our Creative Solution

We knew we couldn’t position The Freedom Boat Club as a sort of a sea-going rent-a-car. The service was too unique and multi-layered for that. Our task was to define the basic idea while simultaneously extolling its benefits.  To celebrate the emotional satisfaction of going to sea piloting your own vessel without ever having to pay for its steep costs. And that’s what we did.  In ads like “The Ecstasy Of Boating Without The Agony Of Owning” we pointed out that you could experience the exhilaration without also experiencing the non-exhilaration.  That is, the non-exhilarating  costs of buying … of insurance …  of maintenance …  of storage, etc.

Say, are you possessed of a nautical nature?  If so, we heartily recommend you look into The Freedom Boat Club.  No, we’re not saying that just because they’re a client. It’s really a sensational concept.  Honest!

FAIRCHILD PUBLICATIONS  bibles


Their Marketing Mandate

Strategic Information Services --- or SIS --- was a newly launched division of Fairchild Publications. More specifically, SIS was a spin-off  of Fairchild’s “Women’s Wear Daily.”  The purpose of SIS was to offer customized market intelligence to the entire garment industry.  Since SIS was at the apparel nerve center, they had access to a global network of information resources.  Our task?  To create advertising that would sell their services to the trade.

Our Creative Solution  

Actually, SIS asked us to create advertising for a number of related missions. One was to sell twelve encyclopedic volumes that they published annually.  Each covered a specific niche in the apparel industry. We reproduced all twelve volumes across two newspaper pages.  Over these two pages, we placed the definitive headline:  “The Bibles.”   SIS also put out periodic detailed studies predicting future apparel trends and developments.  We ran a double page spread with this headline:  “Hindsight Costs Nothing.  Foresight is $7,500 A Year.”  When we focused on offering SIS customized market intelligence to the apparel industry, we dramatized an actual case history with this headline:  “How We Proved That Casual Khakis Would Be A Raging Success.  Before It Ever Happened.”  All the ads ran as  double page spreads in “Women’s Wear Daily” and other industry publications. They scored major successes.  In fact, they  helped to launch SIS as a respected brand offering extremely valuable apparel industry services.
